Skills (beta)

Skills teach AI tools how your organisation does things: how you review code, write pull requests and run your tests, but also how sales prepares a call, how finance checks an invoice or how support answers a customer. A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file (a name, a description and the instructions) and, optionally, more files.

With SpanDock, an administrator turns a skill on once, and every computer gets it, kept up to date, and taken back out when it is turned off.

  • Starter skills are in every plan.
  • Publishing your own skills is on the Premium and Enterprise plans, and in the 30-day trial.

Skills are in beta.

Starter skills

SpanDock comes with ready-made skills for engineering, sales, marketing, support, finance, people, legal and operations, and they update with the app. Each is off until an administrator turns it on. The skills for teams outside engineering are text only, and each tells the AI tool never to invent facts or figures and to ask for what's missing. See Integrations for the full list.

To adapt a starter skill, open it and choose Make your own version.

Publishing your own

On the server's dashboard, open AI tools → Skills and choose Publish a skill. Paste a SKILL.md, or upload a zip of the skill's folder.

  • Versions: publishing a skill again under the same name adds a version. Open a skill to see its versions, view any of them and roll back.
  • On and off: turning a skill off removes it from every computer at its next check-in.
  • Who: editors and administrators publish, roll back and turn skills on or off; administrators delete them.
  • Size: text files only, up to 1 MB per skill.

Skills that run scripts are marked Runs scripts everywhere. Publishing one asks you to confirm by typing its name, and a computer installs it only if its settings allow scripts, which they don't by default.

On each computer

  1. Open Clients → Client defaults (or one computer's settings) and set Skills (beta) to Text skills, or Text skills and skills that run scripts. You can also list the only skills a computer should get.
  2. Within a minute, each computer installs the skills that are on, where its AI tools look for them: Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode.

The person can't change this setting. While skills are installed, the computer's SpanDock names them on every page.

  • The person's own skills win. SpanDock never touches a skill folder it didn't write. If the names clash, the skill isn't installed there, and the Skills page shows the conflict.
  • Nothing is lost. If someone changed a file in one of SpanDock's skills, it is backed up before SpanDock replaces or removes it.
  • Checked: each computer checks every file against the server's list before writing anything.

The Skills page shows which computers have each skill.
