SpanDock

FAQ

Short answers to the questions we hear most. If yours isn't here, write to support@spandock.com.

Does SpanDock need Docker?

No. SpanDock is a single app with an embedded database. There is nothing else to install or run.

Which operating systems are supported?

macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Linux (x86-64 and ARM64) and Windows (x86-64). On macOS and Linux you can install with Homebrew. See Getting started.

Which AI tools work with it?

SpanDock configures Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Qwen Code, GitHub Copilot Chat (VS Code), Goose and Mistral Vibe for you. For OpenCode, Kilo Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, Cline, Continue CLI and Factory Droid, it shows the exact lines to add. Any other tool that exports OTLP/HTTP can send to http://127.0.0.1:4318.

Why can't Cursor or Kiro send to SpanDock?

Cursor and Kiro export telemetry only from their own cloud, not from your machine, so there is nothing local for SpanDock to receive.

Do my code or prompts leave my machine?

Not to us. Telemetry stays on your machines and goes only to the destinations you add. The tool profiles SpanDock sets up keep prompt and tool contents redacted. The SpanDock website receives only license checks, with counts and version details, never telemetry, prompts or code. See Privacy and security.

Do I need an account?

New installs start with a 30-day trial and then continue on the Free tier. To activate a license, create an account on https://spandock.com; signing up creates a Free license. The tunnel between clients and servers needs no account and no open ports.

What counts as an active client?

A client that reported to your server that day. The Usage tier is billed on the day's highest count of active clients, and of servers plus satellites. See Licensing and activation.

What happens if my license lapses?

If the site can't be reached, SpanDock keeps working on the last license it received for a grace period, 14 days by default. If the license expires or is revoked, features are limited to the Free tier until you renew it or paste a current key. Your data stays on your machines either way.

Can I use SpanDock offline?

Yes. Clients queue telemetry on disk while the server is unreachable and send it when the connection returns. The hub needs to reach https://spandock.com for its license check at least once within the grace period. Fully air-gapped installs can use an offline license, which is an Enterprise feature.

How do updates work?

SpanDock checks for a new release every 6 hours, or when you choose Settings → Check now. Install it from the banner or Settings → Updates, or turn on automatic updates. The download is verified against its SHA-256 before it is installed, and if the new version doesn't start, the previous one is restored. You can also pin a version. Clients reconnect to an updated server by themselves.

If you installed the command-line binary with Homebrew, update it with brew upgrade spandock instead; it never replaces itself.

How do I change a computer's mode?

Choose Settings → Mode → Change to …. This deletes that computer's setup for its current mode (data, settings, pairing and secrets), restarts SpanDock, and asks for the mode again. See Modes.

What happens if my server goes down?

Clients keep queueing telemetry on disk and send it when the server returns. With satellites, clients fail over to another server automatically. See Satellites and failover.
